Alimak construction hoists at work on norwegian suspension bridge

Hålogaland Bridge, Narvik, Norway

Two dual Alimak construction hoists are serving the construction of the Hålogaland Bridge in Norway. The bridge, will be the second longest in Norway, and one of the world´s 20 longest suspension bridges with a length of 1,533 meters.

The Hålogaland Bridge is a suspension bridge currently under construction, which will cross the Rombaksfjorden in the municipality of Narvik in Northern Norway. The bridge will be part of the European E6 highway and it will shorten the driving distance from Narvik to Bjerkvik by 18 kilometers. The E6 Highway is among the most important highways of Scandinavia, as it connects several key locations in Sweden and Norway.

Alimak Hek provided two new dual Alimak passengers and materials hoists to its Norwegian dealer Kranor, who rented them out to the bridge contractor. The two dual Alimak Scando 650 FC hoists have given access for workers and materials during the slipforming of the concrete pylons, and followed the moving concrete formworks until topping out at 175 meters. Currently, the contractor Sichuan Road and Bridge Group of China are using the Alimak hoists to reach the pylon tops when erecting the two main steel cables measuring 1,621 meters long with a diameter of 47 cm. The Alimak’s have also been used to access the tower crane cabins.

The operation of the hoists has gone very well without any major disturbances, despite two storms with winds up to 40 m/s. The hoists have been serviced monthly by Alimak Hek’s dealer to ensure the highest level of operational performance and reliability.

The construction hoists are installed with an inclination of 4.5 degrees to follow the incline of the A-shaped pylons. Dual hoist cars were specified to ensure that one out of the two hoist cars can be used in case of emergency situations.

Construction of the bridge commenced in May 2015 and is expected to be ready in the middle of 2018.
